Inmate Found Dead in Elmwood Jail Cell
A correctional deputy found the inmate in his cell and unresponsive at about 8:20 a.m.

A 51-year-old man died while in custody at the Elmwood Correctional Facility in Milpitas on Friday morning, a Santa Clara County sheriff’s spokesman said.
A correctional deputy found the inmate in his cell and unresponsive at about 8:20 a.m. at the facility located at 701 S. Abel St., sheriff’s Sgt. James Jensen said.
Soon after the discovery, jail staff performed first aid and CPR on the inmate, Jensen said.

Emergency medical crews transported the man to a hospital where he was pronounced dead about an hour later, according to Jensen.
Sheriff’s officials have deployed detectives and informed the county district attorney’s and medical examiner’s offices of the death, Jensen said.

The man’s name has not been released until his next of kin has been notified, the spokesman said.
