March may seem a bit early, but having an idea of how to keep your children active and learning through the summer takes a bit of planning. Luckily, Monrovia has a wide variety of choices.

Plan Ahead! Five Summer Camps For the Kids!

Art, local landmarks, acting, recreation and education--youngsters have access to all of it this summer. For the older kids, why not get them involved in volunteering at some of these camps? It’s great experience and is better than just hanging out or wearing out the sofa playing video games. 

Here are five local camps to consider:

1) Camp Monrovia 2011

Learn art techniques and take mini-field trips around Old Town to learn about Monrovia. Instructor , who also runs the at Monrovia’s elementary schools, will be offering her expertise in art and provide several other activities, including movie day, bookworm day, and summer fun days. Camp runs June 27 to Aug. 19 and the cost is $275 per week with no additional fees. The camp is open to ages 4-12 and the hours are 9a.m. to 2 p.m.. Kids bring their own lunches, but snacks are provided. 

2) Monrovia’s Summer Acting Camp at

This four-week camp presented by Discovery Onstage teaches kids to "create their very own performance piece from the imagination up," according to their website. Workshops include Acting, Movement, Music/Song Writing, Dance, Filmmaking, Shakespeare, Foley Sound Effects, Stage Combat, Swordplay and Improvisation. Students compose their own play and perform it at Recreation Park at the end of the camp. Tuition is $795.00 per student and discounts, incentives and scholarships are available.
 It begins July 5  and ends July 29. All students ages 6 - 15 welcome.

3) Summer Adventures Day Camp

This weekly themed educational and recreational program is offered from June 19 through September 1. Students are involved in daily crafts, games, hands-on exploration, and a weekly field trip. One time registration fee of $25.00 is required to enroll which includes camp t-shirt. Weekly fee is $120.00. Includes care between 6:30a.m. and 6:30p.m. daily, costs of activities, field trips, transportation and two snacks. Camp size is limited.


The Y will have a variety of programs available. As yet, they have not finalized their plans, so give them a call for further information. Typically, they offer a wide variety of sports, recreation and educational programs. 

5) Summer Extravaganza presented by the city of Monrovia in conjunction with the

Serving low to moderate income families, this is an 8-week program running from June 27 to Aug. 19. This program offers the typical summer camp activities, recreation, reading club, weekly field trips, health education and character building. The best part, it's free! The program begins at 11a.m., but day care is available at the Boys and Girls Club, beginning at 7:30 a.m. Contact the at 616-256-8246.
