Coroner Identifies 17-Year-Old Fatal Crash Victim

A 17-year-old student died in a car crash last weekend on La Tuna Canyon Road.

Daniel Kaplan was killed on Dec. 1 in a solo-vehicle crash on La Tuna Canyon Road that left the driver and another passenger hospitalized.

Daniel most recently attended Allen F. Daily High School in Glendale and Rosemont Middle School in La Crescenta, according to his family member, Donna Roberts.

The crash occurred about a mile west of the Foothill (210) Freeway when 19-year-old Arash Sanei of Montrose lost control of a 2005 Lexus ES 330 that crashed into a retaining wall about 8:20 p.m. Saturday, Los Angeles police with the Valley Traffic Division said.

Kaplan was declared dead at the scene, police said.

The impact "caused a considerable amount of intrusion -- halfway through the vehicle," Sgt. Donald Kelly said.

Sanei and passenger Steven Dwight Alonso, 20, were taken to a hospital with what police called moderate injuries.
