Electronics retailer Best Buy announced Saturday that 42 of its big box stores would be closing, including two stores in the Bay Area.

Best Buy officials confirmed closures in East Palo Alto and Pittsburg, along with five other California stores. This left the located in Charleston Plaza unscathed. The company had announced during its quarterly earnings report plans to close 50 stores as part of a .

The stores at at 1751 E. Bayshore Rd. in East Palo Alto and 4405 Century Blvd. in Pittsburg will close by May 12. Two have already closed in Missouri, Arizona, five will close in Minnesota and another in Texas.

An outgoing message at both Bay Area locales said they were closed Saturday and would reopen for normal business hours on Sunday. Best Buy officials said employees and store customers had been notified about the closures Saturday morning.

Store officials said they would work with employees at soon-to-be shuttered locations to find positions within the Best Buy company. If a position cannot be secured, severance packages will be available.
