5 Things to Know in Murrieta Today: May 13

1.) Today’s weather is going to make you yearn for the weekend. Today is expected to be mostly sunny with a high near 77, according to the National Weather Service.  Tonight, patchy fog is expected after 11 p.m., otherwise partly cloudy with a low around 52. Winds can gust up to 20 mph, so be careful if you’re out and about today.

2.) Join at tonight beginning at 7 p.m. for their Spring Bowl-A-Thon. While the event benefits St. Martha Catholic Church and their Religious Education classes, all can participate in the event. If would like to help the church out, sign up at the door and they will find you a team. Help out a local church, meet new people and bowl the night away!

3.) Here's what's for lunch today at elementary schools in the Murrieta Valley Unified School District: Galaxy cheese pizza. 4.) The are hosting a reception and book signing celebrating author Doug McAllister’s recently published novel, "The Sovereign Principles." McAllister is a Murrieta City Councilman, currently serving as the Mayor Pro Tem. The event begins at 4 p.m. at the Friends’ Corner Bookstore located at 39445 Los Alamos Road. The public is invited to hear the author discuss his scientific thriller, how he came to write it and his plans for the future. Books will be available for purchase, and attendees may have them signed by the author. Wine, cheese and other light refreshments will be served and Bob Schultz will provide live music on his keyboard. The event is free to the public, though donations to the Friends of the Murrieta Library are welcome.

5.) Today is Friday the 13th, a day shrouded in mystery and superstition. There is no written evidence for this superstition prior to the 19th century; the earliest known English-language documented reference goes back to 1869, according to EverythingIsHistory.com. However, there are oral traditions for Friday the 13th, although it is difficult to pinpoint the exact date of origin for the superstition.  Generally, it is believed to be a combination of two separate superstitions, one based in numerology, and the other based on the calendar. In numerology, the number 12 represents completeness (12 apostles, 12 months, 12 zodiac signs) while the number 13 is irregular.  As far as Friday is concerned, it has been considered an unlucky day since at least the 14th century when it was referenced in "The Canterbury Tales." Also, many professions see Fridays as an unlucky day to undertake a new project or begin new voyage. For more information, click here
