Locals of all ages who are looking for excitement, thrills and some good old fashioned competition can find it all at .

Kart racing is one of the fastest growing indoor sports, and the Murrieta raceway gives locals an exceptionally unique opportunity to experience a taste of the sport right in their own backyard. The air-conditioned indoor track provides hours of fun and enjoyment for the whole family along with a place for friends and co-workers to face off for some friendly rivalry.

How the Fun was Born

The track came speeding into Murrieta due to the friendship between Murrieta resident Jason Williams and co-owner Ken Faught, of Corona. The pair have been best friends for more than 20 years. In 2005, they decided to begin a joint venture that would free them up to spend more time with their families.

Faught, past editor of  a motorcycle magazine, and Williams, a CPA and tax accountant, combined their racing and business strengths to form Pole Position Raceway, a franchise of P2R Karting, Inc. To date, more than $10 million has been invested to create the tracks.

“Pole Position Raceway is a raceway built for racers by racers,” Faught said.

Many famous racers contributed to formation of the tracks, and Faught himself is a three-time land speed record holder.

The two friends have expanded the raceways to include six locations. Corona and Murrieta boast the only California locations. Others include Oklahoma City, Okla., Jersey City, NJ, and Summerlin and Las Vegas, Nev.

The raceway chain has been featured on ABC News and termed as “The No. 1 Chain of  Indoor Kart Tracks” by Racing X Magazine.

The pair is also in the process of opening another location in Dallas, Tex.

“We run a very hands-on operation with more than 145 employees, but we both are actively involved at one of the tracks on a daily basis.”

Hitting the Track in Murrieta

The local track uses high-performance European karts, capable of going 45 miles per hour. The electric karts provide an environmentally-safe alternative to gas powered cars used for outside tracks--and they're faster.

Pole Position’s state-of-the-art track provides an avenue for racing fans to experience the sport firsthand with cars that go up to 45 miles per hour. Each race lasts about 10 minutes with each racer doing their best to outrace their opponenets.

At the completion of the race, all riders are presented with a printout of their standing, called a SpeedticketTM  , which is unique to Pole Position tracks and enables racers measure their performance. Racers can also check online to compare their racing times and positions with others who raced throughout the day.

The raceway also boasts walls full of racing memorabilia, more than 10 big screen TVs airing racing shows, pool tables, a video arcade and snacks.

There are height restrictions for young racers and each new racer is required to watch a safety video. The price is $19.95 a race for non-member adults and $17.95 for adult members. Kid's prices are $13.95 for members and $16.95 for non-members. Membership is $37.95 a year and includes a T-shirt, two races and a free birthday race. Birthday packages are available, as well as corporate packages.

Local nine-year-old Trevor McClain says he is a regular at the Murrieta track, coming about every other weekend for the past two years.

According to Trevor's father, John McClain, his son has one of the fastest track speeds for the kids cars. He credited his son’s success to lots and lots of practice and racing.

For local raceway employee and resident, Brian Smith, this is his first job out of high school and he loves everything about it. Smith fits the riders with helmets and neck protectors. He then gets them set up in cars, instructing them on safety, and operates the high-tech process, flagging racers down at the end.

“What a great first job!” Smith said.

Murrieta Pole Position Manager Ashlee Hunt said she what she likes best is the opportunity to meet new people on a daily basis.

"They are all amped up ready for racing, “ Hunt said. “It’s just a great work environment."

According to Hunt, riders who frequent the raceway are of all different ages. Their busy times are on the weekends and on Thursdays, when kids race free with a paid adult.

Another popular time is Father's Day. Gift certificates start at $35 for a father and child.

“Father's Day is one of our busiest times of the year and can be just a really special time for a father and daughter or father and son--all in a nice air-conditioned atmosphere,” Faught said.
