Girls Basketball: Nighthawks Win, Rams Fall To Chaparral

Murrieta Valley varsity girls basketball sneaks past the Wolfpack with a 39-38 win.

The Nighthawks slipped past a resilient Wolfpack hungry for victory at their expense. The win keeps Murrieta Valley one game behind the league-leading Broncos, who are 6-0.

The defending Southwestern Champion Nighthawks were put to the test Friday night by Great Oak. The Wolfpack surprised Murrieta Valley with a strong second period after falling behind in the first. Great Oak outscored the Nighthawks by 11 in the third and led 22-17 at the half.

The Nighthawks had a wolf of their own. Led by Karen Wolf, Murrieta Valley came roaring back in the second half. She grabbed her 9th double-double of the season and went 7 for 12 from the field with 15 points. She also snagged 11 rebounds, and had 3 steals.

Trailing late in the fourth, Wolf’s gritty offensive rebound and put back closed the gap to one. This set up the steal and scores by Ariana Hernandez to win the game in the final seconds.

“Karen had a great attitude, outstanding play and never quit. She had a great all around and consistent game,” said Coach Scott Richards, who named Wolf the player of the game.

Hernandez scored nine points against the Wolfpack. Deshea Wilkes hammered in another seven while Aliah Marshall and Brynn Dahmer each scored four.

The Nighthawks will host the Murrieta Mesa Rams Wednesday. The Rams lost to Chaparral 50-37 on Friday. Murrieta Mesa is 0-6 in league play and is looking for its first-ever league win against the Nighthawks.
