Girls Water Polo: Nighthawks Stung by Sharks in Overtime

Murrieta Valley varsity girls water polo drops a close one to Corona's Santiago High School in a battle of champions, 6-4.

Defending CIF SS Division 3 Champion Murrieta Valley took to the pool and played the Sharks in a grueling game Monday that ended in a 4-4 tie at the end of regulation play. Corona's Santiago High School scored two points in overtime to win it.

The Sharks were the Division 2 Champion last season. Murrieta Valley was moved up to Division 2 this season after repeating as Division 3 champs. The Nighthawks are ranked sixth in the latest CIF Division 2 poll; Santiago is ranked third.

This was the second loss to Santiago this season. The Sharks won the Dec. 17 game, 12-9 and MVHS Coach Bryan Lynton was disappointed but pleased with the result.

“They dominated us last game. We’re showing some improvement, so that’s good,” Murrieta Valley coach Bryan Lynton said. “That’s a good team and to go overtime, means we’re close.”

Murrieta Valley executed their defensive assignments well as they slowed the prolific Shark offense. Nighthawk goal tender goalie Abigail Goveia
made spectacular saves throughout the game.

Nighthawks’ center Paige Virgil and Maddie Sanchez scored two goals each.

The Nighthawks will be in Irvine this weekend to for a non-league tournament.
