Marine Who Died in Parachuting Accident Near Perris ID'd

A U.S. Marine killed in a skydiving accident just north of Perris Valley Airport was identified Wednesday as a 26-year-old Burlington, Colo., resident.

Caleb Medley suffered fatal injuries around 3 p.m. Tuesday when his parachute apparently failed to deploy and he plummeted into a storage yard in the 2000 block of Goetz Road, according to the Riverside County Coroner's Office.

The Camp Pendleton-based Marine was pronounced dead at the scene.

Medley was doing training exercises at Perris Valley Skydiving with a group of Marines from Camp Pendleton at the time.

The circumstances of the accident were under investigation, sheriff's officials said.

Meanwhile, the Marine Corps has not confirmed his identity, though the 1st Marine Division did announce that a Camp Pendleton-based Marine had died during a training accident Tuesday.

More information about the incident was expected to be released Thursday morning, a spokesman for the 1st Marine Division at Camp Pendleton told Patch Wednesday.
