Nearly Two-Dozen Arrested for DUI over Thanksgiving Weekend
According to the California Highway Patrol, 22 drivers were taken into custody between 6 p.m. Wednesday and 11:59 p.m. Sunday.
By City News Service:
More than 20 motorists were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence in the Riverside metropolitan area during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, authorities said Monday.
According to the California Highway Patrol, 22 drivers were taken into custody between 6 p.m. Wednesday and 11:59 p.m. Sunday.
The arrests were made during the CHP’s statewide “maximum enforcement period,” when all available officers are deployed to catch DUI suspects, speeders and other traffic violators.
The 22 arrests in Riverside and neighboring communities where the CHP has jurisdiction compares to 33 arrests during the same time last year, according to the agency.
There was one fatal crash -- on Thanksgiving night. About 10:25 p.m., 27- year-old Britney Gambale of Corona apparently lost control of her 2015 Subaru WRX while going southbound on Interstate 15 in Eastvale, causing the vehicle to veer off the freeway and overturn after striking the Bellegrave Avenue bridge, according to the CHP.
Gambale and her 3-year-old daughter, Sarenana Mackenzee, were killed in the crash. Both were ejected from the vehicle. Gambale was not wearing her seatbelt, and she had not secured Sarenana’s car seat, according to Officer Travis Monks.
During last year’s Riverside area Thanksgiving MEP, there was one deadly crash resulting in a single fatality.
The CHP’s next maximum enforcement campaign is Christmas weekend.
