After a close call Friday with a massive streaking asteroid that missed Earth by 15 minutes, the North Bay and the rest of California took a collective breath.

The JPL Asteroid missed striking land on Earth by 17,000 miles -- not a great distance in Space terms.

But the sigh of relief did not last long.

According to USA Today, the California skies were lit up by another object Friday -- a fireball. And, in Russia, an asteroid actually did hit land on Friday, opening up a massive crater.

The newspaper, meanwhile, said the fireball over California, described as a "sporadic meteor," first lit up the skies in Santa Rosa and then moved on to other parts of the North Bay and the rest of the state.
