Uprising tells the remarkable story about women claiming their own space against all odds to improve the economy, reduce poverty and curtail conflict. Ordinary women have been making a difference in the direst of circumstances. Women are fighting for social justice where international organizations and governments have failed to make a difference. These women have fought against the Taliban, genital mutilation, rape and poverty around the world. Sally Armstrong tells their stories with empathy, dedication and passion.
Known as the War correspondent for the world’s women, Sally Armstrong is a member of the International Women’s Commission at the UN, three-time Amnesty International award winner, and author of Ascent of Women. She is the recipient of seven honorary doctorate degrees and is a Member of the Order of Canada. Armstrong has covered stories in zones of conflict all over the world; and the struggles of these people have become the focus of her writing. In her documentary film Daughters of Afghanistan, she presents the fight for education and health-care rights for women and girls in Afghanistan after the Taliban and how it put them in danger. Sally Armstrong has been at the forefront of reporting on the Taliban’s treatment of women, female circumcision, and women making changes on a grass roots level where international organizations have failed.
