A soccer ball, still inflated. A plastic jug with wrapped candy and small change inside. Beer bottles, soda bottles, water bottles and mucky plastic bags galore.

There were no surprises in the garbage I helped pull from the waters and banks of the Napa River Saturday morning, on a clean-up paddle with .

But the beer can we found glued to a support of the Maxwell Bridge was a bit unusual.

It hovered above our heads, a trail of something sticky-looking beneath it to indicate where some boating joker had affixed it in passing, at some point when the tide was higher than the one on which we floated Saturday.

Art? Prank? Advertisement? Vandalism? It doesn't matter now. Though we couldn't reach it with our gloved hands, my boatmate dislodged the can with a brisk clout from his paddle and we tossed it into the blue bag with the rest of the recycling.

All in, our group of eight in kayaks collected close to 100 pounds of trash and recycling on Saturday's paddle.

The excursion — followed by a sumptuous meal on the deck at —was part of the annual, international Coastal Clean-Up Day, but Kayak NV conducts river clean-ups monthly, said co-owners Liza Pearson and Laurie Aboudara-Robertson.
