Stabbing at Newark Square is Gang-Related, Police Say

Tuesday night's at the Newark Square Shopping Center that critically injured an 18-year-old Newark man is gang-related, Cmdr. Mike Carroll of the Newark Police said Thursday.

No other details about the incident were released, but Carroll did say that the investigation of the stabbing has been forwarded to the Alameda County Major Crimes Task Force.

Police said the began investigating the stabbing just before 8 p.m. Tuesday and learned the man had been stabbed multiple times.

Carroll said Wednesday that the victim's injuries are life-threatening but did not have an update on his condition Thursday afternoon.

The stabbing occurred the same night that a gang-related, drive-by shooting occurred, police said.

About six shots were fired into a home on the 6300 block of Mirabeau Drive around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, police said. No injuries were reported.

Carroll said police are still working to determine whether the two incidents are related.

But while both the stabbing and shooting are gang-related, Carroll did note that "gang-related crimes have dropped by 70 percent n Newark since 2008."

No suspect information is available in either incident.
