Fire Engulfs Newport Beach Garage
A fire, likely started by a car engine blaze, caused roughly $50,000 in damage to a Newport Beach garage.

At 2:51 p.m. Friday, a resident called 9-1-1 to notify the Newport Beach Fire Department of a fire at her home on Rue Marseilles. The first units on scene reported that the garage was engulfed in flames. Six Newport Beach Fire Department units responded, assisted by two Orange County Fire Authority units, with a total of 20 personnel. The firefighters had the blaze under control within 20 minutes of the original call.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but preliminary findings suggest that the source was a vehicle inside the garage. The homeowner reported that, upon returning to her home and parking her vehicle in the garage, she heard a strange noise and saw flames emanating from under the hood. The homeowner was able to close the connecting door to her home and safely evacuate herself and her pet from the residence before firefighters arrived. There were no injuries or casualties reported at the scene.
Firefighters were able to keep the fire confined to the garage area. Flames did not spread to the rest of the residence or any nearby structures, due in large part to the homeowner’s quick actions of closing the garage door and alerting 9-1-1. Damage is estimated at $50,000.
