Newport Beach Celebrates Balboa Island Centennial This Weekend

A statue will be unveiled commemorating the Centennial Celebration of Balboa Island. A brief ceremony will take place on Sunday Sept. 18.

NEWPORT BEACH, CA —It's a great weekend to visit Balboa Island, and to witness the vast improvements made by the Balboa Island Improvement Association. Newport Beach officials join to celebrate the achievements and witness a statue dedication ceremony.

Newport Beach City officials and representatives from the Balboa Island Improvement Association (BIIA) will commemorate the centennial of Balboa Island during a brief ceremony on Sunday, September 18 at 11 a.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Newport Beach Mayor Diane Dixon, City Councilmember Edward Selich and BIIA President Lee Pearl will kick off the Balboa Island Community Celebration with a plaque dedication in front of the Carroll Beek Community Center. Following the dedication ceremony, the BIIA’s centennial statue, Sunset, will be unveiled at its location on Turquoise Avenue. Both locations are within a short walking distance of one another and light refreshments will be served at the community center.

Attendees are encouraged to stay on the Island to join in the Balboa Island Community Celebration from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. along Marine Avenue. This event was organized by the BIIA, Balboa Island Marketing, Inc., Little Balboa Island Homeowners Association and the Balboa Island Museum and Historical Society.

Balboa Island was officially incorporated into the city of Newport Beach in 1916. The Island has become well known for its quaint homes and unique business district filled with nautical-themed shops and a variety of restaurants and bistros. The Carroll Beek Community Center is located at 115 Agate Avenue.

The Sunset statue, located at Turquoise Avenue and South Bay Front, was funded by private donations. The complete list of donors is on the statue’s plaque.
