Plane Engine Catches Fire During Takeoff At John Wayne Airport Tuesday

ORANGE COUNTY, CA — A Delta Airlines 757 engine caught fire during takeoff Tuesday at John Wayne Airport, but the flames were quickly extinguished and no one was injured, authorities said.

Flight 447 for Atlanta reported smoke in the number two, right-side engine at 1:25 p.m., airport spokeswoman AnnaSophia Servin said.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze and towed the jet to the gate, Servin said. The 166 passengers and six crew members got off the plane safely and no one was hurt, she said.
