The Arches, a Newport Beach Dining Institution, Closes Its Doors

One of John Wayne's hangouts, the restaurant received rave reviews from Zagat.

The Arches, a Newport Beach Dining Institution, Closes Its Doors

The Arches restaurant, a fixture in Newport Beach since 1922, closed its doors this month.

No reason has been given for the closure.

The Newport dining institution served Shirley Temple, John Wayne and other Hollywood stars from its original West Coast Highway building.

The Zagat Survey in 2008 called the Newport dining institution "worth a visit if you love classic dishes and service. The tableside preparation of our Caesar salad was like taking a class in how to make a great salad. The seafood, especially the Abalone and Scampi, wowed us with tenderness and flavor. Owner Dan chats with his customers like with old friends, handing out red roses to the ladies! Superb!"
