A 20-year-old man who suffered burns over more than 70 percent of his body was fighting for his life Thursday morning after being pulled from a burning apartment in North Hollywood, a fire department official said.

The fire was reported at 10:44 p.m. Wednesday in a first-floor unit in the rear of an apartment building at 6737 Denny Ave., near Vanowen Street and Bob Hope Airport, said Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Three veteran firefighter paramedics resuscitated the man, who was lifeless when he was pulled from the two-story building, Humphrey said.

The man was hospitalized with second- and third-degree burns over more than 70 percent of his body, Humphrey said.

A total of 37 firefighters responded and had the fire knocked down in 18 minutes, confining it to the single apartment, he said.

The cause of the fire was under investigation and the monetary damage was being tabulated, Humphrey said.
