Friday Night DUI Checkpoint Yields 3 Arrests

In addition to the arrests, 11 citations were issued for unlicensed drivers and two for suspended drivers.

Friday Night DUI Checkpoint Yields 3 Arrests

Of the 1,613 drivers screened at Friday night's checkpoint at the 1600 block of Novato Boulevard, three people were arrested for drunken driving, Novato police said Saturday.

Officers performed 21 field sobriety tests at the grant-funded checkpoint, which resulted in arresting three people with a blood alcohol level over the legal limit, according to Lt. Oliver Collins. Officers also issued three moving violations and a total of 13 citations for unlicensed and suspended drivers.

At a checkpoint on July 1, two DUI arrests were made out of 1,701 drivers screened and 22 field sobriety tests given.

The checkpoints are funded through the California Office of Traffic Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The goal is to reduce the number of victims killed and injured in alcohol-involved crashes, Collins said.

Locations of checkpoints are not announced in advance because it helps encourage drivers to stay sober and not circumvent the checkpoint area.
