An 86-year-old Fairfax man was hospitalized after a three-vehicle crash Monday afternoon on Novato's west side, sources said.

The man needed to be extricated from his Ford Escape after it rolled in the intersection of Novato Boulevard and Simmons Lane at 3:14 p.m., acting Captain Mario Bernardini said. The SUV landed back onto its tires in the middle of the intersection.

Sgt. Jennifer Dunlap of the said it appeared the injured driver was the one who caused the crash. Two other vehicles, a Lexus SUV and a Honda sedan, were in the left-hand eastbound lane prepared to turn left onto Simmons when the eastbound Ford Escape came from behind and struck them, she said.

Dunlap said the man's legs were hanging out a window and his body was across the front seats when she arrived, but his injuries did not appear to be life-threatening. Novato Fire medics took the man to Marin General Hospital with lacerations to his face and head, Dunlap said.

"It didn't appear he was wearing a seat belt," she said.

Occupants of two other vehicles involved in the crash were not injured, Bernardini said.

The cause of the crash was under investigation by the Novato Police Department. Witnesses can help with the investigation by calling 897-4361.
