Congratulations to the mighty Novato High/San Jose women’s softball team. They beat the Olive team by one run in the championship game capping off several nights of the School Fuel tournament. As has been said many o’ time in the past — or maybe I’ve only heard it once or twice before — go Scornets!

You can head out any time today, Thursday, Oct. 26, over to Red Boy Pizza in Ignacio, order yourself some great pizza to eat there or to take out, and tell them you’re there to support Loma Verde Elementary, and the good folks at Red Boy will fork over some more green to Loma Verde.

Want an absolute must-do with the kids? Of course you do. Lacking a kid to use as a cover to take in the Spooky Swamp? Don’t worry. No one will judge you. Who wouldn’t want to dare to enter the Spooky Swamp? [Cue the horror movie soundtrack.] Pleasant Valley Elementary is the place to be from 4 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. one night only on Saturday, Oct. 27. This is the terror-ific place to be. Don’t worry, though, it’s a family friendly haunted house appropriate for elementary school children (and the squeamish old folks like me). Spooky Swamp admission is $5, with all proceeds benefitting the school, for ages 4 and up.

Lest I’ve scared you too much, let me note that organizers promise no blood, no gore, and no violent images.  You can also tour the Sleepy Hollow Hotel for $3 more.

Once you’ve got your wits about you again, you can help out Loma Verde. On Friday, Nov. 2, all of the students at the school will be taking part in a lap-a-thon, walking or jogging or running their way to participate in one of the school’s three biggest fundraisers. Right now, students are hitting up their friends and families — and maybe even a presidential candidate or PAC — asking them to pledge a buck or two or 10.

Feeling left out because you don’t know any Loma Verde student personally? I’ve got an in for you: you can send your support directly to the Loma Verde PTA. You can do a straight-up donation. You can do a matching donation. You can even bring your pom-poms that day and cheer them on as they compete to do the most laps. All family and friends of Loma Verde are welcome to watch. The action goes from 10 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Have you seen the new track they’ve put in? That came to life because people stepped up to donate.

California Grill is opening up the till yet again, this time to support San Jose Middle School on Tuesday, Nov. 6. You know you won’t want to cook on Election Day, so eat in or take out or even stock up on some gift cards. Armed with the uploaded flier, you can help San Jose get 15% of your receipt. Go for the ribs, or any one of their other delicious offerings. Go on. It’s for a good cause.

On Thursday, Nov. 8, come join smARTt for its first Dine & Donate Night at The Mandarin Restaurant at the Days Inn. From 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., while you dine, enjoy performances first by smARTt students and then the music of the Role Models. I’m told the four folks making up the Role Models (Scott MacLeod, Tim Long, Phil Rountree and Ramon Berger) will have you dancing ‘til you drop.
