U.S. Marine Desperately Searching for Her Missing Service Dog

The 1-year-old German Shepherd disappeared the day after Thanksgiving.

A Marine Corps veteran is looking for help finding her dog Kai, a one-year-old German Shepherd that helps with her post-traumatic stress disorder. The dog went missing the day after Thanksgiving in Vista, CA, while she was there visiting her parents.

Alexandra Melnick has put up more than 500 fliers around Oceanside, Vista and Camp Pendleton. There are no signs the dog dug out under the fence, and Melnick is skeptical the dog jumped her parents’ fence, the neighbor’s fence and then escaped the gated community where her parents live.

“Kai is friendly to everyone and well trained,” Melnick wrote on Facebook. “It makes me nervous that someone would take them for themselves or sell Kai to breeders for money. There are so many motives that come to mind but my enemy list is slim-to-none.”

She allows this “may not be very likely.”

She’s just beside herself that her dog, a black-and-tan, micro-chipped German Shepherd, is gone.

“He was never used for the military, but he does help with PTSD-related aspects for me as a service dog,” said Melnick, who served four years in the Corps. “I would really like for him to come home.”

Anyone who finds Kai may drop him at the nearest shelter.
