Alcohol Suspected in Palm Desert Crash

Robelo Barboza-Cruz, 24, of Cathedral City was arrested for alleged DUI following a crash on Portola Avenue and Chaparral Road Saturday afternoon.

A 24-year-old man involved in a Palm Desert crash Saturday was believed to have been driving under the influence of alcohol, sheriff's officials said.

Robelo Barboza-Cruz, 24, of Cathedral City was arrested for alleged DUI following a crash about 6:50 p.m., on Portola Avenue, near Chaparral Road.

He was booked into the county jail on suspicion of misdemeanor DUI and misdemeanor DUI with a .08 or higher blood alcohol level, jail records show.

He was cited and released on bond for $2,500, pending a Dec. 18 court date.

Investigators found that a gray GMC Sierra was heading south on Portola Avenue when the driver tried to make a U-Turn in the middle of the block, a sheriff's sergeant said.

The vehicle jumped the curb south of Chaparral Road, ending up on a raised planter, Sgt. Patrick Carroll stated in a news release.

The suspect was not injured, the sergeant said, but alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.

The investigation is continuing and officials ask that anyone who may have witnessed the crash contact the Palm Desert Police Department's Traffic Division at 760-836-1600 (reference case #T12 287 0068) or Valley Crime Stoppers 760-341-STOP.
