Witnesses said one of the two drivers killed in a head-on crash Sunday night on State Route 62 in Morongo Valley was speeding and driving recklessly, a California Highway Patrol spokesman based in Joshua Tree said Tuesday.
The crash was reported by a 911 caller at 9:55 p.m. June 16, as a head-on collision involving two vehicles on the 62 just east of North Star Trail in Morongo Valley, CHP Officer Alex Scott said in a statement distributed June 18.
Amelia R. Miller, 23, a Marine stationed at the Twentynine Palms Marine Corps Base, was driving a 2009 Dodge Caliber east on the 62, and Nicole L. Holly, 31, of Palm Desert, was driving a 2004 Ford Ranger west on the 62, Scott said.
For unknown reasons, Miller allowed her vehicle to drift to the westbound side of the road, where the front of Miller's vehicle struck the front of Holly's vehicle, Scott said.
Both Miller and Holly sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced deceased at the scene.
"Witnesses stated that Miller had been speeding and driving recklessly prior to the collision," Scott said.
California Highway Patrol Officer Simon Miller, no relation to Amelia Miller, is the primary investigator of the collision, Scott said.
