Fire Destroys Vacant Indio Home

Twenty-five firefighters called to morning blaze.

INDIO, CA --- A fire ravaged a vacant house in Indio today, collapsing the roof of the structure before firefighters could contain the flames.

At 5:20 a.m., Riverside County firefighters found a single-story house ablaze near the area of Quail Avenue and Calhoun Street, said April Newman of the Riverside County Fire Department.

The 1,120-square-foot home was "heavily involved in fire'' when firefighters arrived. The roof of the home eventually gave way, but 25 firefighters were able to contain the fire at 6:10 a.m., Newman said.

Fire crews remained on scene for about two hours to mop up.
