Representatives from NASA and Jet Propulsion Laboratory visited Palos Verdes High School this month, Principal Charles Park reports.

He writes:

On Feb. 19, our students welcomed Col. Mark Vande Hei and JPL scientist Steve Collins by showing the Palos Verdes Institute of Technology projects, such as:

  • The PVHS ROV
  • UAV
  • First robotics
  • Rocketry
  • Solar canoe teams

The multipurpose room was a full house and families from all over the Hill came to hear our guests speak. Mark spoke about his training and the missions that he is preparing for in the future. Steve spoke about how he helped land the Curiosity rover on Mars!

The presentations were both exceptionally informative, fascinating and very engaging.

The program started with a reception at 5:30 p.m. in our College & Career Center where Mark and Steve were welcomed by school board members and Superintendent Walker Williams.  At 6:30 p.m., they spoke to an   audience of more than 450 members of our community in the MPR.

Our VIPs departed our campus with Sea King hats and a photo in front of our mural.  Students, faculty, parents and community members alike were all grateful for their visit.
