Every Wednesday, Piedmont Patch highlights five great things to do with your kids in town, or very close by. Here are this week's picks:

    Why Go: Athletics can help high school students get into top schools even without the top GPA. Find out how to do this right in this informative session organized by the PHS Boosters Club.

  • Where/When:
    , 800 Magnolia Ave., Piedmont. Tuesday-Thursday, 3:15-4:45 p.m.
    Why Go: All the brawn in the worlds won't help you without the brains. If you need some help in a class, or just quiet time to finish up all that homework, drop by the library after school to catch up. With finals approaching fast, now is a great time to drop in.
    Pricing: Free

  • Where/When:
    YMCA, 2330 Broadway Ave., Oakland. Friday, 6-10 p.m.
    Why Go:
    Yearning for a night out (or perhaps a quiet night in), but can't find a babysitter? Let go of the guilt and let YMCA take over! Bring kids ages 4-10 for dinner, a movie and games for a few hours.
    Pricing: $20, members; $25, non-member

  • Where/When:
    Museum of Children's Art (MOCHA), 538 9th St., Oakland. Saturday and Sunday, 1-3 p.m.
    Why Go: Create some gadgets and sculptures using bits and pieces of technology like transistors, resistors and capacitors. Learn a little about how all this stuff works and make art!
    Pricing: $8, child; free for adults and members

  • Where/When:
    , 5366 College Ave., Oakland. Saturday, 10:30-11 a.m.
    Why Go: This weekly storytime features not only stories, but songs and finger puppets too. It's a nice way to start the morning, after which you can stroll down College Avenue, granted the sun comes out by then!
