Major Power Outage in Oakland-Berkeley Hills

Bay City News Service—Pacific Gas & Electric reported a major power outage in Oakland and in the Berkeley Hills. The outage, reported just after 5 p.m., affected 10,950 customers, according to PG&E spokeswoman Jana Morris.

The cause of the outage has not been confirmed, but multiple customers called to report a collision involving a car striking a power pole, Morris said.

PG&E had power restored by 6:45 p.m., but electrical power failed again in some areas a few minutes later, this time taking Comcast cable TV/Internet services wih it. Power was restored for the second time about 9 p.m.

The outage appears to have been caused by a squirrel that got into some equipment at a substation, according to PG&E spokeswoman Jana Morris.
