Paying to Play: High School Sports Fees Set to Rise at College Park

How much do you pay for your kid to play sports?

Paying to Play: High School Sports Fees Set to Rise at College Park

The cost of playing sports at will likely go up next academic year. Mount Diablo Unified’s governing board was scheduled to review a proposal Monday night that would increase the fees students pay to play everything from varsity football ($300) to junior varsity tennis ($150). Some sports, including golf and water polo will remain at $50, while a new $75 fee will be required to play freshman volleyball, baseball, softball and soccer. In one small break for parents, the fee to play freshman football would be reduced from $250 to $200.

What do you think? Is the cost of high school sports getting out of hand, or does a parental investment in student athletes deliver dividends in better grades, high self-esteem and physical fitness in a couch potato culture?
