Pleasanton Cyclist Who Survives Being Hit By Car Scores New Bike, Helmet

Firefighters who responded to the collision chipped in to replace the man's sole mode of transportation.

PLEASANTON, CA — A Pleasanton cyclist who was injured after he was hit by a car while biking Tuesday has a new bicycle and helmet thanks to the kind hearts of several local firefighters.

The man was bicycling on Santa Rita Road around 1 p.m. when he was hit. According to Livermore-Pleasanton Fire officials, the man was taken to a nearby hospital. The victim’s family told firefighters the bicycle was his only mode of transportation. Firefighters decided to take the bicycle to get repaired.

“The crew from Truck 93 took the injured man's bicycle and was going to try and get the wheel fixed or replaced for him,” Deputy Fire Chief Joe Testa said.

According to Testa, once the crew learned of the price to get a new wheel, they noticed that for a just a few dollars more they would be able to purchase a new bicycle and a helmet.

"Captain Chris Lima, Engineer Neal Sanchez, Firefighter/Paramedic Jorge Diaz and Firefighter Joel Ficher reached into their own pockets and purchased the new bicycle and helmet for the patient,” Testa said.

Testa said the members of the Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department went above and beyond the call of duty to provide outstanding customer service to the victim.
