Deputy Mayor Jim Cunningham will lead the first group of hikers along the new trail opening in Poway this weekend.

A New Trail in Poway Opens on Saturday

Deputy Mayor Jim Cunningham has completed 11 marathons over the past 20 years. He’s also gotten hypothermia while hiking in Calgary. But he doubts anything that dramatic will happen this weekend when he celebrates the opening of a new trail in Poway.

“I don’t expect this walk is going to finish me off,” he said of the 10-mile private hike he’ll lead from the Trans-County trail to the Old Coach North staging area for the public ceremony. “But you never know.”

This trail is San Diego County’s first north-south connector to branch off from the 55-mile Coast to Crest trail, which leads from the ocean at Del Mar to the San Dieguito River’s source on Volcan Mountain.

“We’re the first ones to actually officially walk this trail and I’m sure that’s something I’ll never forget,” Cunningham said.

And while he’s honored to have the lead role on Saturday, Cunningham said the real credit goes to the city and San Dieguito River Park Joint Powers Authority staff for making the project happen.

The ceremony begins at noon on Saturday at the Old Coach staging area at 12460 Highland Valley Rd.
