Two Soroptimist Scholarships Available This Year

The Violet Richardson Award is offered to girls 14-17.

Two Soroptimist Scholarships Available This Year

The Poway Soroptimists have announced they are accepting applications for their annual scholarship program, and this year two are available.

Girls between the ages of 14 and 17 are encouraged to apply for this year’s Violet Richardson Award, honoring girls who are making a difference through volunteer service. Examples include working to end discrimination and poverty, assisting women and children who are victims of domestic violence, or mentoring young girls. One Poway award winner will receive a $500 scholarship toward her charitable organization. Violet Richardson was president of the first Soroptimist Club.

The Women’s Opportunity Awards program will offer a $1,000 scholarship to a woman who provides the primary source of financial support for her family. The recipient may use the cash award to offset costs associated with attempts to attain higher education, such as books, childcare, tuition and transportation. Applicants must be enrolled in, or have been accepted to a vocational/skills training program or undergraduate degree program and must demonstrate financial need.

To apply, contact Mary Mitchell at (858) 206-6532 or marymitchell_1@yahoo.com. To learn more about the awards visit www.sipoway.org.

CELEBRITY SERVERS TONIGHT AT KAMINSKI’S

If you are a Chargers fan, tonight is a good night to watch Monday Night Football at Kaminski's BBQ in Poway. Yes, the Chargers are not playing. Instead, they’ll be serving your dinner!

Punter Mike Scifres is hosting a benefit with his teammates, volunteering their time as servers to raise money for Scifres’ MS-5 Foundation, which supports children's hospitals in San Diego and New Orleans. Early in life, Scifres almost lost a leg to infection. He credits the Children's Hospital in his home town New Orleans for saving his life. That’s why he’s giving back. Come watch New Orleans take on Philadelphia, beginning at 5:30 and contribute to the cause. It’s a good idea to get there early. Kaminski’s is at 12735 Poway Rd.

HELP MAKE DOLLS

The Aviva Chapter of Hadassah needs volunteers to stuff “healing dolls” that are given to children hospitalized in San Diego as well as Israel. The dolls bring comfort and consolation during traumatic times. The next event is 1:15 p.m. this Wednesday at Eastview Community Center, 17520 Drayton Hall Way in RB. Contact Rose Greenberg at (858) 487-5228.

TOYS FOR JOY

I’m fortunate to have grown up in a prosperous time and usually got everything I wanted for Christmas. Sad, but estimates are that 19 percent of San Diego families are now living in poverty and for them it will not be the hap-happiest time of the year. Poway is not immune. That’s why local salon ITAN Poway is staging a toy drive. Between now and Nov. 30, bring a new, unwrapped children’s toy to the salon as part of the annual Toys For Joy local charity event. Last year the charity was able to provide 8,000 toys, 12,000 bags of groceries and 130,000 articles of clothing and shoes.

ITAN is located at 12642 Poway Rd., ste. 20. Call Bita Ehsanipour at (650) 455-6604 or email bita@bitaehsanipour.com. For your donation, get a free Sun, Spray or Spa service to say thanks for giving back.
