Remote Rescues near Rancho Santa Margarita Remind Hikers to Use Good Sense

Five hikers in the remote area of Rancho Santa Margarita were attended today by Orange County Fire Authority due to heat related illness

RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA, CA—The Orange County Fire Authority reported on two remote rescues today in Aliso and Wood Canyon area, as well as in Whiting Ranch.

"We had two remote rescues today, and evaluated a total of five patients," OCFA Capt. Steve Concialdi said in interview. "One of the people treated was celebrating her 80th birthday."

The family of four hikers was evaluated for heat related illnesses, and a female in her mid-20s was transported to Saddleback Memorial Hospital, according to Concialdi. Four were taken back to their vehicles, to follow her—the 80-year-old grandmother declined ambulance ride to the hospital.

"With hot weather like we are having in the area, we are reminding people to use good sense when hiking," Concialdi said.

According to the OCFA, when the temperature is elevated, as with the current heatwave, mountain area temperatures can hover in the low to mid 90s.

"Unless you are in very good shape, consider hiking another day," Concialdi advised those considering hiking during hot weather.

  • Choose the time of day and length of time you spend hiking with care.
  • Check the weather forecast.
  • Always hike with a friend or friends and let someone know how long you will be gone.
  • Bring plenty of water, and have a charged cell phone.
