Flames Ravage RV, Home In Trabuco Canyon

A house fire near Rancho Santa Margarita closes roads in Trabuco Canyon. The home and RV suffered devastating damage.

RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA, CA — Smoke and flames filled a Trabuco Canyon neighborhood Friday morning, according to Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Steve Concialdi. The fire began in a shed and spread to the Recreational Vehicle before damaging two homes. The estimated damaged was $170,000, including two structures sustaining exterior damage, damage to two vehicles, fence, RV and an outside equipment shed where the fire began.

"There was some form of electrical malfunction inside," Concialdi said.

Neighbors were without power and trapped by emergency vehicles, and officials closed the roads for residents trying to enter or leave the neighborhood until after 8 a.m.

"An RV was well involved in flames, and fire was spreading to a home on that same property," Concialdi said.

Thirty OCFA and U.S. Forest Service personnel responded to the scene, including two engines.

"The fire extended to a two-story home that was next to it, as well as two vehicles, a Tacoma and a Prius," Concialdi said. "The home sustained damage to the wood siding, RV total loss, fence on the property sustained damage, and two vehicles sustained damage."

Residents were able to leave the neighborhood as of 10 a.m. SoCal Edison remains on scene for outage repair. It is unclear as of this report how many homes were without power in the area. As of 10:15 a.m. no outages were shown on or near Pine Street in Trabuco Canyon.

A surge protector malfunction was the cause, according to OCFA investigators.

"Make sure your surge protector has a circuit breaker built in to the power strip, to enable power shut off in case of an electrical short," Concialdi said.

A family of three, two adults and a child, were uninjured and their cats were safe as well, Concialdi said.

This is a developing report. Information will be updated as it is released.
