Update: The victim's family has identified him as Michael Giardino of San Pedro. According to his son, Giardino was "doing what he loved" when he died.

A man died Sunday after competing in the swimming leg of the Redondo Beach Triathlon near the Redondo Beach Pier.

The man, who was participating in the triathlon, came out of the water and collapsed on the beach, according to a witness. He did not appear to be breathing.

Paramedics performed CPR on him for about 15 minutes before an ambulance transported him to a hospital, according to witnesses and Los Angeles County lifeguards.

Police later confirmed that the man had died; however, no additional information, including his identity, was released.

Redondo Beach police Sgt. Fabian Saucedo said Monday morning that he was unsure whether the victim's next of kin had been notified about the death. Saucedo said that nobody had come to pick up the man's bicycle and other personal effects, which are in the custody of the Redondo Beach Police Department.

The annual Redondo Beach Triathlon is not a full triathlon but a "sprint" sanctioned by USA Triathlon. It consists of a half-mile swim in the ocean, a 6-mile bicycle route and a 2-mile run.
