Top 10 Stories: Chick-fil-A Vandalized

It's been a crazy year. Redondo Beach Patch writers were busy writing about homicides, television episodes and dancing firefighters, among other topics. Here is the No. 2 story of the year, chosen by popularity and editorial discretion.

'Tastes Like Hate' Painted on Wall of Torrance Chick-fil-A (No. 2)

The sound of news helicopters circling Hawthorne Boulevard near its intersection with 182nd Street awoke many residents of North Redondo Beach on Aug. 3. As it turned out, someone had painted a caricature of a cow and the words "Tastes Like Hate" on a Torrance Chick-fil-A in the 18200 block of Hawthorne Boulevard, across the street from Redondo Beach.

The message was quickly painted over, and several hours later, artist Manuel "Manny" Castro claimed responsibility for the graffiti in an interview with the Huffington Post, which came amid a firestorm surrounding the Chick-fil-A CEO's comments supporting traditional marriage.

Castro, who is gay, was arrested about a week later.

Though the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office declined to file felony charges, the city of Torrance pursued misdemeanor charges against Castro. In November, Castro pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor vandalism charge and was sentenced to three years of probation.

Castro was also banned from entering any Chick-fil-A eatery while on probation, and he can't possess paint, paint brushes, spray paint, aerosol cans or vandalism tools outside his home. He must perform 200 hours of community service and pay $819 in fines, penalties and a booking fee.

A restitution hearing is scheduled for Jan. 9.
