Poll: Who Hasn't Done Their Taxes Yet?

File your return by Tuesday to avoid late penalties and interest.

I'll admit, I'm a terrible procrastinator when it comes to taxes. I even made a late-night trip to the West Sacramento post office a few years ago to file at the absolute last possible minute.

We don't have much time left, but this year is a few days easier than most.

The tax deadline is traditionally on April 15, but it's been pushed back to April 17 this year due to the fact that April 15 is a Sunday and April 16 is Emancipation Day in the District of Columbia.

April 17 is also the due date to apply for 2011 tax extensions.

The Internal Revenue Service encourages taxpayers to file returns electronically. According to a statement posted on the IRS website, e-file is "the best way to ensure accurate tax returns and get faster refunds."

For last minute filing tips, see the IRS video posted above.

Northern California procrastinators aren't alone. According to the makers of tax software TurboTax, San Francisco has the most last-minute filers in the country.

On Tuesday, the last collection of mail at the West Sacramento post office at 3775 Industrial Blvd. will be at 11:59 p.m.
