Anti-Nuclear Group to Lobby City Council

San Clemente Green will implore council to sign off on a letter to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the California Public Utilities Commission.

Anti-Nuclear Group to Lobby City Council

Discussion of the troubled San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station will appear on the San Clemente City Council agenda Tuesday evening. The following is a release from Gary Headrick of San Clemente Green:

A special exception was made at the last minute to have San Onofre on San Clemente's Agenda once again. Two formal letters will be up for consideration for council to direct towards the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the California Public Utility Commission.

The NRC is being called on to confirm that San Onofre will not be allowed to restart without a public and transparent license amendment process being completed, and that the waste storage issue will be addressed concurrently by ordering the transition to Hardened On Site Storage immediately.

(Editors Note: Hardened on-site storage refers to removing spent nuclear fuel from water pools and encasing it in concrete, an option viewed as a safer storage method for nuclear waste.)

The CPUC will be called on to hold an Order Instituting Investigation, which is critically needed to determine:

  1. The economic impacts of the failure of the brand new steam generators and subsequent shutdown of the nuclear facility
  2. Whether ratepayers bearing the various costs for the problems is justified; and
  3. The overall economic prudence of continuing to operate these unreliable, aging reactors.

Full text of letters can be  found here .

The meeting begins at 6 p.m., but we are not likely to be heard until 7 p.m. It is at San Clemente City Hall, 100 Avenida Presidio. We expect a significant number of people to show up.
