Caller Reports Bogus Telephone Repairmen

SHERIFF'S BLOTTER: Also, guy with phone asks to use a phone, begging gets out of control and a cheapskate gets upset when denied his freebies.

Caller Reports Bogus Telephone Repairmen
At 10:09 a.m. Thursday Dec. 19, a caller reported what appeared to be bogus telephone repair men at the intersection of Calle de Cerro and Avenida Vista Montana. The caller said two people were sitting at a green box, looking like they were monitoring calls. But they wore no work uniform and there was no phone company vehicle present.

At 8:21 a.m. Thursday Dec. 19, someone called the sheriff’s office to complain about a person who came to the caller’s door, asking to use the phone.  Then the man wandered off down the street, using a cell phone and checking out other houses. Deputies arrived and arrested a 25-year-old unemployed man who remains in custody in lieu of $40,500 bail.

At 9:20 a.m. Thursday Dec. 19, a caller phoned deputies to complain about a homeless man begging for money at the post office in the 500 block of Avenida Pico. The man, wearing a beanie and holding a “Please Help” sign, has been a continual problem, the caller reported.

At 12:31 p.m. Thursday Dec. 19, deputies received a report of a disturbance in the 1000 block of Avenida Pico. According to an employee of a nearby business, a patron comes in frequently, demanding freebies. When the employees refuse, the customer becomes verbally aggressive. The employee stated that the customer works nearby.

These are selected reports from the San Clemente Police Dispatch Services log throughout the past few days. The calls represent what was told to a sheriff's deputy in the field by the radio dispatcher. No presumption of criminal guilt or affiliation should be drawn from the information provided.
