Man Trapped When Range Rover Goes into 'Super Lock Mode'

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, CA - It took Orange County firefighters about a half-hour today to free a man from his 2001 Range Rover Discovery 2 that went into “super lock mode” with him inside in San Juan Capistrano, authorities said.

The firefighters found the Mission Viejo man looking at his owner’s manual when they arrived at the parking lot at Del Obsipo Street and Camino Capistrano at 4:45 p.m., said Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Steve Concialdi.

“He said he had been having electrical problems with his car,” Concialdi said. “It went into super lock mode and he couldn’t get out.”

The firefighters called another firefighter who had the same car and he told them the car would unlock with the key fob outside the vehicle, the captain said.

The man in his 40s climbed to the hatch at the back of his SUV and firefighters used a special tool to open the hatch just wide enough for him to pass out the key fob, Concialdi said. It worked, and the man was freed.

“It has happened to other vehicles and we’re just glad we were able to get him out without damaging the vehicle,” he said.
