7 More Layoffs Proposed for CUSD

The is poised to eliminate seven more nonteaching positions, including those who monitor students being disciplined, at Monday’s meeting of the Board of Trustees.

In April, , affecting everyone from campus supervisors and middle school librarians to instructional assistants and bus drivers. Many of those positions were filled with less-than-full-time employees.

Those layoffs became permanent that assumed a worst-case scenario of $51 million in budget cuts. The worst-case scenario is predicated on Gov. Brown’s Prop. 30 temporary tax increase not passing in November.

Since the April 25 meeting, state and federal programs have notified the school district that funding for the new school year will be even less than anticipating, prompting further cuts, according to the Monday agenda description.

The positions affected are a part-time bilingual community services liaison, five opportunity assistants who fill the equivalency of 4.44 full-time positions and a part-time school clerk. According to an online description, the opportunity assistants supervise students under disciplinary action.

The lay-off notice gives the employees 45 days’ warning.

In other news, the trustees are expected to:

  • Hear an update on , the district’s new online high school. So far, 96 students have enrolled, of whom, 25 are new students to the district.
  • Receive a $5,877 grant from Western Digital in Irvine to develop an interest in engineering among students at  in Mission Viejo, Chaparral Elementary in Ladera Ranch,  in Aliso Viejo and  in San Clemente.
