A water main broke on La Matanza Street in downtown San Juan Capistrano, turning the street into a canal Tuesday.

According to an email from the city:

As part of the city’s Annual Street Rehabilitation Project, the Public Works and Utilities Department Project is in the process of removing and replacing the street paving on La Matanza and La Calera streets.  Due to unusual conditions at this project site, the equipment used to re-compact the native earth below the removed paving caused breaks to the city’s water main and service lines. City crews responded immediately and proceeded to repair the damaged water main and service lines as quickly as possible.  In order to make the repairs, water service was shut down to our customers on La Matanza Street for about 10 hours. The city’s crews and contractor worked until after 10:00 PM on Tuesday night to restore water service to all of our customers. All water service was restored at that time.
