The boy was in full cardiac arrest after good Samaritans rescued him and another young girl from the water on Sunday, according to hospital spokeswoman Melinda Krigel.
But today, the boy's condition has been upgraded from "serious" to "fair," Krigel said.
The boy is conscious and talking and his family is with him, Krigel said.
San Leandro police had received 911 calls at 4:19 p.m. Sunday reporting that a young boy was in distress near Marina Park.
By the time emergency crews arrived, the boy had been pulled from the water and a good Samaritan was performing CPR, Alameda County fire officials said.
Doctors attribute the boy's recovery in no small part to "the work of good Samaritans and the Alameda County Fire Department," Krigel said.
San Leandro police are investigating how the boy ended up in the water but there were no updates yet in the case.
The boy will remain in the hospital for treatment, Krigel said.
