UPDATE: Reader Describes Scene Of Man Clinging to Sign On I-580 Friday

Eastbound Interstate Highway 580 closed for about 45 minutes Friday evening near 150th Avenue in San Leandro while emergency crews got a man off the sign that overhands the exit, CHP Officer Ralph Caggiano said.

The man was taken into custody without incident and the highway was reopened by about 7:15 p.m., Caggiano said.

A Patch reader posted this account of the incident:

"It was crazy. The guy would sit on the sill at the bottom of the sign. Then get up and stagger around, throwing his arms up erratically, all the while not falling down. He would go around to the back of the sign and dangle down like an agile monkey. Then pop up on the other side, making his way back to the middle of the sign. It was very much surreal.

We were wondering why it took the police and fire men so long to apprehend him. It was clear that he was not cooperating and did not leave his spot. They may have possibly afraid he would hurt himself or someone else.

Very much surreal."
