Fire Chief Sought. Job Pays Up To $191,000

Permanent chief sought to run 490 person department.

Fire Chief Sought. Job Pays Up To $191,000

Alameda County has been without a permanent fire department leader since June, when former chief Sheldon Gilbert resigned to become director of business development and governmental affairs with Paramedics Plus, the county's new ambulance company.

The interim county fire chief is Demetrious Shaffer who had been fire chief in Newark.

The search is on for a permanent replacement.

A portion of the  job listing reveals a bit about the department:

Alameda County . . . is California’s sixth largest county. The Alameda County Fire Department (ACFD) serves the cities of San Leandro, Newark, Dublin, Emeryville and Union City, the unincorporated areas of the County as well as the Lawrence Berkeley and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories. The Department is supported by approximately 490 authorized positions and a reserve force of 100. Serving a population of roughly 400,000, ACFD receives nearly 32,000 calls for service per year . . . The salary range for this position goes up to $191,112 and is supplemented by a competitive benefits package . . . This recruitment will close at midnight on Sunday, November 11, 2012.

For about 15 years the county Fire Department has occupied a corner of the offices at San Leandro's City Hall, but in the spring it was revealed that the headquarters would be relocated to Dublin.

Any questions for the supervisors who will ultimately make the pick? Any thoughts about the department as its new leadership solidifies?
