Grading, Construction for 'The Village' Set to Begin Next Week
The existing parking lot at 1550 East 14th Street will be closed starting on March 12 due to the construction.
The City of San Leandro is pleased to announce that groundbreaking is set to begin next week on the Village Shopping Center to be located at 1550 East 14th Street, the site of the former Albertson's supermarket.
In order to begin the necessary grading that precedes construction, the existing parking lot will be closed beginning on Wednesday March 12th. Community residents are advised that vehicle parking no longer will be available once grading begins. Innisfree Ventures II, who owns the property, anticipates completing construction in time for a Fall 2014 grand opening.
The Village is a privately-financed, $10 million development that will energize the core of Downtown San Leandro. The shopping center will be constructed on the 1.7 acre site purchased by the City's former Redevelopment Agency for development and used temporarily for replacement parking during the construction of the Downtown Parking Garage. The sale of the site was protracted by the onset of the economic downturn several years ago, the elimination of redevelopment agencies statewide, and the decision of the originally envisioned anchor tenant to exit the United States market.
The Village development will include three buildings, which will house a new CVS pharmacy, Peet's Coffee, The Habit Burger, AT&T and a yet to be identified tenant. High-quality architectural design elements will be incorporated into the exterior of The Village, including stone work, arbors and trellises.
The project also will include a plaza offering outdoor dining and free public WiFi, a fountain, art display panels, granite seat benches, decorative lighting with hanging flower baskets, art-inspired bike racks, decorative paving, and new sidewalks. Trees planted along East 14th Street and decorative grates along street frontages also will add to the attractiveness of the Village.
