Mayor Wants More Upscale Housing

Mayor Wants More Upscale Housing

At the last city council meeting of the year, Mayor Stephen Cassidy requested that San Leandro focuses on more upscale housing than lower-income housing projects — which has been the focus in the past.

San Leandro is currently in the process of attracting high-tech businesses to the city. According to Cassidy, in order to successfully lure those types of businesses, the city needs suitable homes so the employees can live in the same town as they work.

“I believe there is a nexus with having jobs and business owners live in the city,” Cassidy said. “Having a balanced and prosperous San Leandro is a goal we all share.”

The new development at the Marina shoreline can be an area where more upscale housing can be built, suggested City Manager Chris Zapata.

According to the San Leandro Times — David Erlich is skeptical about the city’s involvement with both low-income and expensive housing.

“It’s transitioning San Leandro into a place I didn’t want to move to,” said Erlich.
