Pictures From The Past: Hudson Lumber Company

These images from 1910-1912 show the plant back when it was making 'pencil slats' and possibly milling wood for San Leandro's older homes.

Patch from a former San Leandro woman seeking pictures from the 1960s and 1970s when her father worked at the now-defunct Hudson Lumber Company.

That request prompted school board member and civic activist Mike Katz-Lacabe to plumb the San Leandro Main Library's digital archives for pictures of the mill, which he passed on to Patch for publication today.

The pictures date from 1910  to 1912, before the period sought by the original inquirer, and take us back to a time to the city's industrial past.

The Historical Marker Database says Hudson Lumber was known for making pencil slats (see a pictorial on pencil-making here).

Did the mill also produce lumber for the city's older homes and businesses, or was it specialized around pencils?
