The all-mail parcel tax elections for voters in the San Marino Unified School District take place on March 12. The deadline to vote register is Feb. 25.

Deadline for Voters in SMUSD Parcel Tax Election is Monday

Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk Dean Logan reminded residents in the San Marino Unified School District that the deadline to register to vote in the upcoming election is Monday. The all-mail parcel tax elections take place on Tuesday, March 12.

To date, there are nearly 9,000 registered voters for the SMUSD Parcel Tax Election.

Voters in the San Marino Unified School District will be asked to approve Measure R, which if approved, authorizes the district to extend its pre-existing parcel tax for six more years at $330/year. The amount of the tax can be adjusted upward annually to account for inflation.

The exact question on the ballot reads:

"In order to continue funding quality educational programs and classroom instruction, prevent increases in class sizes and reductions in teaching positions, attract and retain high quality teachers and employees, and support educational programs that enhance student achievement, shall the San Marino Unified School District extend its expiring school parcel tax for six years at $330 per parcel with an exemption for seniors, adjustment for inflation and all money staying in our community to benefit our local schools?"

Voters must approve the measure by a 66.7 percent majority. Back in 2009, more than two-thirds of voters approved the measure -- previously known as Measure E -- with 71.2% of voters' support.
